Finding the perfect Video Editing Software

One of the biggest questions I had when I began my video editing pursuit was, "What video editing software do I use?" When beginning the search for the right software, it can be somewhat overwhelming. I am here to help settle that overwhelming feeling and present to you the pros and cons of the primary video editing software on the market today.

The Plague of Windows Movie Maker and iMovie

First of all, I would like to address the topic of Windows Movie Maker (Windows) and iMovie (Mac). If you are looking to become a talented and skilled video editor stay far, far away from these two editing programs. They are not used in the professional world and should not be used for those who intend to expand their knowledge of true video editing.

Now, on to true video editing software reviews...

Sony Vegas Pro 11

The first editing software for the new video editor is offered to us to the ever so loved and cherished Sony Inc. 

Pros:  

• Simple User Interface (for the beginner editor)
• Powerful Sound editing features
• Requires less powerful computer to run

Cons: 

• Not as widely used in the industry 
• Less third-party compatibility 
• Cost to purchase

Overall, Sony Vegas is a powerful, easy to use, not-the-norm, video editing software for the beginner. It is a great and simple tool for the beginning video editor but as you progress in your skills you may find that there are not many professionals that use this software. A personal note: I started with Sony Vegas and thoroughly enjoyed the user interface and layout of the software. 

 Adobe Premiere CS6

Our next competing video editing software is produced by the ever so popular Adobe.  Adobe Premiere CS6. 

Pros: 

• Many outside resources
• Amazing compatibility with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
• Simple User Interface

Cons:

• Cost of Software 
  
• More Complex User Interface
  
• Can be slower than competitors

Overall Adobe Premiere is a very compatible video editor. If you are looking for something with cross platform operation, many training resources at your disposal, and compatibility with many related programs, Adobe Premiere CS6 is for you.

Avid Media Composer 6 

Finally, the primary industry standard for video editing comes from our friends over at AVID Studios.  

Pros:

• Primary Industry Standard 
• Lots of Third-party support (Plug-ins)
• Great for TV, Broadcast, Episodic type videos 

Cons: 

• Least User friendly of all competitors
• Inefficient File Management
• Overall workflow not as fluid as competitors

Overall, Avid is a not so user-friendly interfaced video editor. It's main strengths focus on Broadcasting/Television video editing projects and it has many third party supports. This is the industry standard software for video editing but could be so widely used by all because of this fact, rather than people's true personal preference. 

In Summary: 

As we have seen, these are three very different editing programs but in the end can all accomplish the same goals. It is the way these programs accomplish this goal that differs. Now that you have the facts you can weigh your options based off your OWN needs and decide for yourself which editing program is best for you. So, What is the right editing software for YOU?
